A Giant Sculpture In Public Square Of Budapest

Budapest boasts a new piece of outdoor art, as a giant, yelling man burst through from his underground world, just in time for Halloween celebrations last week.

“Feltépve” (Ripped Up/Popped Up) as the bizarre piece is known, is the work of “polihysteric art designer” Ervin Loránth Hervé and is located in the historic Széchenyi Square in Budapest, Hungary. It was created in affiliation with the annual Art Market Budapest 2014 international contemporary exhibition and art fair, and is one of the definite highlights of the exhibition.

Though the sculpture is made from polystyrene, which is a kind of lightweight foam, its appearance can be compared to stone or solid granite. What makes it even more believable, are the clumps of grass that are strategically placed on the giant’s shoulders and head, further emphasizing his furious need to get up and escape the underground.

So is it just a statue of a giant pushing through the earth? The gallery explains the theories behind the piece: “The creation has several meanings, such as the symbolism of freedom, the desire to break free, the curiosity, and the dynamics of development. It can be interpreted as the demonstration of the present situation of the contemporary art scene, or even as it strives to create an urban public communal space.”

Hervé was supposed to finish the installation two days before it was revealed, however, uneven ground and external circumstances caused this to be impossible and it was officially unveiled on Sunday. He also added that the statue was completely ‘selfie-compatible’ and would be glad to see pictures of his incredible creation across social media.

The Art Market Budapest exhibition highlights contemporary Central and Eastern European art and artists, and also features informative round table discussions, book launches, presentations, artist interviews and other fantastic events.

As for the amazing sculpture, the gallery believes that because of the sculpture’s positioning in the popular square, many will be able to view the incredible creation during the week.
